Subject: DTV Transmitter Technology Trends For Today and For the Future, and Repack Update
Today’s DTV transmitters are significantly superior from their predecessors, largely due to device technology improvements and by intelligent design. Modern transmitters are far more efficient, more reliable, and often much simpler than the first generation products. In addition, power density has been dramatically improved, resulting in footprints less than half that of early DTV transmitters.   A review of a modern DTV transmitter design architecture will be given, as well as some thoughts about the future of DTV transmitters. On a different topic, GatesAir’s perspective of how the FCC Spectrum Repack is going will be briefly reviewed. After the presentation, we will walk through WKBD’s DTV transmitter system.
Martyn Horspool is Product Manager for Television Transmission at GatesAir, in Mason, Ohio. Martyn has worked in the broadcast industry for almost 45 years, starting in the United Kingdom in 1974 as a transmitter maintenance engineer. His move to Harris Broadcast Division back in 1980, started a long career that has paved the way to his current role, including positions in Service, Sales Support, Engineering, and DTV Applications Engineering. Martyn has participated and presented at many major conferences Worldwide and has authored several publications and technical papers.
