Note: Registration is now closed. Attendance is limited to 25 and registration is required. See below for registration information. Walk-ins will not be admitted.
We all know that the weather affects so much of our lives. Look at Hurricane Florence hitting the Carolinas. Michigan is lucky that we do not get that many extreme events. But tornadoes, blizzards, and very strong storms do occur. Weather is important to all of us. Pilots need good forecasts. Boaters require the latest updates. In our everyday lives we need to know the forecast.
Our October program is a tour of the National Weather Service office in White Lake, Michigan. See the upper atmosphere balloon release if you get there by 6:45 for the 7:00 PM launch. We will then get a tour of the office and view the WSR-88D radar system used to track severe weather. This uses state-of-the-art imaging technology to locate and analyze weather phenomena in the region. The system used to send alerts to the broadcast stations and the public will be discussed. You will get a chance to see how forecasts are done.
The presenter is Rich Pollman. He is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the Detroit area. Rich is a U of M graduate and has been with the National Weather Service since 1992.
There is no charge to attend, but there is an attendance limit of 25 placed upon us. Sign up will be on a first-come first-served basis. Members and non-members may register at any time but priority will be given to SMPTE members who register by September 25. If fewer than 25 SMPTE members register by September 25, non-members will be contacted in the order in which they registered.
We have reached capacity so registration is now closed.
This is a Federal facility and special security rules apply. Non-citizens will have to call the NWS prior to September 30 to provide personal information. Non-citizens will receive instructions on how to provide this information.
We look forward to an insightful October meeting. Thanks to Detroit Section Manager Chris Hill for making the arrangements.
Due to the early start time, there will be no Managers’ Dinner this month.
Instead, we’re planning to have a no-host Managers, Members and Friends dinner on Tuesday, November 13 at 6:00 PM. Details will follow.
