The Detroit Section of SMPTE is made up of professionals, students and others interested in the technology of motion imaging. The Section holds monthly meetings with a technical topic. Non-members are always welcome and there is usually no admission charge.

Did you know SMPTE offers Master Classes in Lighting? How about On-Demand Webcasts on Lens Considerations for 4K Digital Cinematography or UHD Television Production? That’s because lighting and lenses should not be taken lightly when it comes to the quality of your production. How often do you consider the importance of the number of frames per second to collect in order to produce the perfect look for your media presentation? This will not be a master class, rather an hour-long primer or refresher that should give techs, engineers, creative service professionals, instructors and students at least one take-away that will make you feel glad you came!
Jonathan Kopacz, Owner of Jon Kopacz Photography and Adjunct Instructor at The Art Institutes, will present an informative and entertaining look at the photographic connection of lens, lighting and frame rate to motion media. Jon will discuss getting to know the potential and limitations of your equipment, as well as basic camera functions like aperture, ISO & FPS. He will touch on color, motion & stability. The words GoPro and Drones may also come up before opening the session to a Q & A discussion.
Jonathan Kopacz earned a Bachelor’s of Digital Photography with a Focus on Commercial Multimedia from the Art Institute of Michigan and has been a professional photographer for more than eight years. He is a board member of the Michigan chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP).
The Art Institutes is a system of over 50 schools across North America. They provide hands-on education in the creative and applied arts by offering master’s, bachelors and associate’s degree programs as well as non-degree programs. With respect to the motion media industry, the Art Institutes provide an important source of media arts professionals that include audio engineering, graphic design and animation.

Subject: Unraveling the Mysteries of Digital Cinema Package (DCP) Authoring

DCP / Digital Cinema Package, simply defined, is a collection, usually on a hard drive, of digital files containing Digital Cinema (DC) images, audio and related data.
How a motion picture now gets to a theater screen via DCP is the topic of this month’s Detroit SMPTE program. With the conversion from film to digital projection for theatrical presentation nearly complete, your local multiplex, independent theaters and many film festivals now specify DCP deliverables, replacing video tape, movie files, DVDs, and yes, film. While the “majors” now do this on a regular basis, independent and student content creators are frequently unclear on how or where to have DCPs made for distribution or festival showings. This is evident by the many questions on the topic on industry online forums.
AV Materials and metadata must be properly organized, formatted and structured to meet SMPTE and DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) standards and specifications (do not try this at home). The process of creating a DCP is, at present, best left to an authoring facility.
Our presenters will guide us through the process involved in DCP authoring and distribution.
Nick Hrycyk is an industry veteran, who, since his arrival here in 1982, became a respected editor and post-production expert at a number of high-end facilities in the Detroit area (including some of of his own), and is recipient of many awards, including an Emmy. In May 2011, Nick launched Bluefish Post to actively concentrate on feature film, documentary and episodic television editing. He also has taken on the roles of Principal Editor, Production Supervisor and Executive Producer for Great Lakes Films LLC, whose purpose to own, invest and produce motion pictures and television shows for theatrical and broadcast release
Rob Smith is a long-time engineer and editor, whose résumé also includes many top local and outstate client facilities. Rob balances these skills to provide a variety of services. While frequently a production EIC or DIT, he also has contributed to a number of facility installations and interactive multimedia display designs for major clients.
Tom Phillips, owner of Water Hill Creative, is an award winning creative with over 19 years in the post-production industry. His experience covers national spot work, special venue displays and feature film work with expertise on every level from acquisition to final delivery.
We hope to also have theater operators and digital cinema service providers present, to provide added value to the presentation.
