Thomas Bause Mason is the Director of Standards Development at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) where he leads SMPTE’s standards development efforts and industry engagement. He began his career in Cologne, Germany, as a computer programmer for automation software in the nuclear and automobile industries. Before his move to Los Angeles, Bause Mason worked at the West German Television (WDR) and Cologne Broadcasting Center (CBC), where he led the quality control department. In addition, he worked as an independent database developer. In Los Angeles, he became a postproduction consultant, building and running the encoding operations for Ascent Media. Joining NBC Universal in 2005, he focused on emerging digital media technology, spending two years in London to support the company’s international business. Moving to New York in 2008, Bause Mason provided proof of concept, product evaluation, and best practice implementation advice to NBC Universal’s various business units. He assisted industry organizations in the development of standards, technical recommendations, and study group reports. He holds several patents relating to watermarking, 3D, authentication, metadata tagging and VR.
