Join the DC and Baltimore chapters of SMPTE and SBE for a special Media Forward program at WBAL in Baltimore. This student outreach event is designed to bridge the gap between students and industry professionals. We are connecting high school and college students with broadcast and media professionals to inspire the next generation of engineers, technologists, and storytellers.

What to Expect

This in-person event is for students interested in any facet of media technology, including audio, video, streaming, podcasting, broadcast, editing, and promotion. The day will include:

  • Tours of WBAL's AM, FM, and TV broadcast operations
  • Presentations and success stories from alumni and industry stalwarts
  • Live, interactive SBE study support for CRO/CTO certifications
  • Valuable advice on education, mentorship, and professional opportunities
  • Opportunities to connect with professionals from SMPTE and SBE and meet the next generation of media talent

Who Will Be There?

  • Juniors and seniors from the WKHS (Kent County High School) broadcast training program
  • Media students from Montgomery College and Towson University
  • Educators, mentors, engineers, and media professionals from SMPTE and SBE

Our Principal Speakers


Joanne Carl

Media Instructor, Montgomery College 

JoAnne Carl is a seasoned leader in video production and organizational development. She has 25 years of experience in broadcast production, holds a Masters in Educational Technology Leadership, and has been a college professor for 20 years. She has received Montgomery College’s Outstanding Faculty Awards and two national NISOD Excellence Awards.


Geary Morrill 

Vice President, Society of Broadcast Engineers 

Geary Morrill has been deeply involved in radio broadcasting as an owner, air talent, and engineer. He is currently a Regional Director of Engineering for Connoisseur Media. Geary serves as Vice-President for the Society of Broadcast Engineers and chairs the society's Education Committee.


Karl Kuhn

Sherwood Insights 

 

Karl Kuhn founded Sherwood Insights L.L.C. to provide technology training and leadership coaching. During his 45+ year career, he held leadership positions at major video technology providers and was raised to SMPTE Fellow in 2015. He holds multiple patents and is a contributing author to the NAB Engineering Handbook.

Plus, cameo presentations by Jonathan Solomon, Kerry Plackmeyer, Perry Priestley, David Van Dyke, Chris Singleton, Bob Eburg, Brian Szewczyk, Kevin Trueblood, Jim Hammond, Camri McKee, and Towson University EMF department leadership.
