Frederick G Walls | 2025, Standard Director

Fred is a SMPTE Fellow and has been active in SMPTE standards work for over 10 years. He currently serves as chair of TC-10E and co-chair of the Joint Task Force on AI and Media. He previously served as co-chair of TC-31FS and editor for recent DPX-related standards and revisions.

Fred works as a Fellow at AMD, focusing on strategic architecture for AMD’s industry-leading display engine. He serves as the Marketing Working Group Chair for the HDMI Forum. He has made significant technical contributions to the HDMI specification and was the primary developer and main author of the widely deployed VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) standard. Before joining AMD in 2022, Fred worked at Broadcom for 23 years on machine learning and video architecture for set-top box ICs. He is listed as an inventor on 30 issued US patents and has authored 8 papers. He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT
